Launch of Bonnet Toun Bicycles at Stewarton Academy
September 2023 seen the launch of Bonnet Toun Bicycles at Stewarton Academy.
Cycle Station will continue to supply the project with bikes which we have been rescuing from recycling centres within East Ayrshire and offer work experience placements and volunteering opportunities to the young people involved in the project in our workshop and training centre.
The project is funded by DYW and supported with ‘in kind’ funding by Cycle Station as part of our commitment to skills development and community based learning.
The project was officially opened by Provost Jim Todd who said: “I was delighted to officially open the Stewarton Skills Academy project – Bonnet Toun Bicycles. It is so important to engage with our young people and to support brilliant projects like this that will help them to succeed and achieve.
Teacher of Physics and Bonnet Toun Bicycles Project lead, Drew Burrett said: “The project will provide our young people with the opportunity to learn essential cycle maintenance skills and allow us to expand our curriculum which is is key to the development of vocational and employability skills for young people in the school environment.
This is the second project which Cycle Station has contributed their support to which I have been involved in and I wish to thank Alan and Derek for their continued support in getting another project established and look forward to working with Cycle Station as the project advances.
Our Community Outreach Director, Alan Vass said, “I met Drew a good six years ago when he worked at Ardrossan Academy, we provided the same support to Drew and the team in Ardrossan as we have in Drew’s latest venture at Bonnet Toun Bicycles. Cycle Station is focused on developing opportunities in cycling for young people and are committed to the Young Persons Guarantee of creating and linking young people to jobs, training and volunteering opportunities. I wish Drew all the best with the project and look forward to continuing the partnership with Stewarton Academy”
