For many parents, buying a bike for a growing child can feel like a short-term investment. Children can quickly outgrow a bike that was the perfect size only months before, leaving families with the choice of buying again or making do with something that no longer fits properly.
Cycle Station is looking to change that through Project Pedal, its children’s bike subscription programme designed to make good-quality bikes more accessible to families.
Rather than repeatedly purchasing a new bike as a child grows, Project Pedal allows families to access a suitable bike and then swap it for the next size when the time comes.
It is a simple idea, but one that could make a significant difference.
A correctly sized bike
is particularly important when a child is learning to ride. Bikes that are too large, too heavy or difficult to control can make learning feel intimidating and frustrating. Giving a child a bike that suits their size and ability can help them develop balance, control and confidence much more naturally.
For Cycle Station, encouraging children to enjoy cycling from an early age is a key part of the project. As demonstrated by our Balance Buddies class ran every Saturday. We use the same SQUISH bikes for these classes due to their lightweight frame and high quality build.
The easier and more enjoyable those first experiences are, the more likely children are to continue cycling as they grow. That can mean more time outdoors, increased physical activity and cycling becoming part of everyday life rather than something they simply tried when they were young.
There is also an environmental benefit.
Children’s bikes often have plenty of life left in them when they are outgrown. Through a swap-based model, bikes can be maintained, prepared for their next rider and kept in use for much longer.
This reduces the need for perfectly usable bikes to sit unused in sheds or garages and helps create a more circular approach where one bike can support several children throughout its lifetime.
For families, it also removes some of the pressure of continually replacing increasingly expensive bikes.
Project Pedal combines affordability, sustainability and quality with one simple goal: to make it easier for more children to have access to a bike that is right for them.
And when the bike gets too small?
They simply move on to the next one.
