The Darvel Bike Bus: Changing How Children Travel to School

At Cycle Station, we have always believed that cycling has the power to bring communities together and help young people build confidence and independence. One of the best examples of this happening locally is the growing success of the Bike Bus at Darvel Primary School.

We were especially grateful to East Ayrshire Council for their recent visit alongside Scotland’s Transport Minister, which gave the opportunity to showcase the positive impact that active travel is having within the school and the wider community. It was encouraging to see local efforts recognised and supported, and we were proud that the Bike Bus could be highlighted as part of that work.

The Driving Force Behind the Bike Bus

A huge part of the Bike Bus success comes down to the dedication and enthusiasm of Siobhan Richardson, one of the Primary Schools teachers, whose passion for encouraging families to travel actively has helped the project grow from a simple idea into something that pupils and parents genuinely look forward to.

Through her commitment and encouragement, Mrs Richardson has helped create a welcoming and supportive environment where children feel excited and confident about cycling to school. Her work has shown that active travel can be practical, enjoyable and achievable for local families.

At Cycle Station, we are proud to support this work and to help provide the skills, guidance and encouragement that allow young riders to take part safely and confidently.

Building Confidence on Two Wheels

One of the biggest benefits we see through initiatives like the Bike Bus is the confidence it builds in young riders.

Cycling regularly helps children develop independence, awareness and resilience. For many pupils, riding to school becomes something they take pride in, and it gives them a sense of achievement that carries into other areas of life.

Supporting children as they develop these skills is something we care deeply about at Cycle Station and it is incredibly rewarding to see their progress over time.

More Than Just a Ride to School

The Bike Bus is about far more than simply getting from home to the classroom.

It creates a sense of community, bringing families together and giving children a positive start to the school day. Instead of arriving stressed or tired, pupils arrive energised and ready to learn.

In a small town like Darvel, initiatives like this can have a real impact by encouraging healthier habits and helping families feel more connected to their community.

Proud to Support Active Travel in Darvel

At Cycle Station, we are proud to support the Bike Bus and the wider active travel work happening at Darvel Primary. Working alongside dedicated individuals like Siobhan and with the support of East Ayrshire Council allows us to help more children experience the benefits of cycling and develop skills that will stay with them for life.

The growth of the Bike Bus shows what can happen when schools, communities and local organisations work together and we are excited to continue supporting its development in the future. Cycling is about more than transport. It is about confidence, independence and community and the Darvel Bike Bus is a brilliant example of that in action.
